Dear all,
please find Alasdair Cockburn’s report of the Anniesland Trophy held on Tuesday 24th June at Denham Golf Club
Mike
This year it was decided to have a shotgun start at 8.45am. Everyone was on notice to arrive in good time to allow for long walks to their starting tees. However, the M25 did not co-operate, giving up to 30 minutes or more delays for many of the players, with quite a rush to be in position at the start. Consequently, many teams including Glenalmond never got a chance to get together and agree tactics.
The day was perfect for golf, bright and sunny, but not too hot, and with a testing two club wind. As usual the yellow tees seemed to be placed quite far back on the tees. The main morning competition is played in groups of 3 players from different schools. Each school team comprises 4 players with the best 3 stableford scores to count. Our team was :-
Alasdair Cockburn 29
Dougie Lawson 30
Willie White 30
Tim Worlledge 31
Our team score of 91 put us in 8th position out of 16 teams, and tied with Strathallan. We had undoubtedly left a few putts out on the course but other teams probably had the same experience.
The winners were Stewarts Melville with a score of 100, followed by Glasgow Accies on 96. Historically these are low scores, no doubt due to the wind and possibly putting difficulties, down to the players and not the greens which were excellent.
The individual winner was Paul Boyle, playing for the Caledonian Club, with an excellent 39 points. It will have helped that he is a member of Denham.
Perhaps most notably 2 holes-in-one were scored in the morning but were not celebrated with any drinks. Very disappointing!
In the afternoon greensomes over 9 holes, Alasdair Cockburn and Tim Worlledge scored a decent 19 points, compared with the winning score from our playing partners from Glasgow Accies of 21.
The decision to start with a shotgun was very successful. It meant that everyone had the wonderful Denham lunch together and the afternoon greensomes ran to time, which has not always been the case.
