The weather on the Ayrshire coast defied expectations as 8 golfers (and coach Andy Todd playing behind) ventured onto the links at Prestwick. The OGGS side were kindly gifted caps for the occasion by Andy, which turned out to be very helpful as glorious sunshine was interspersed with a few showers.
It seemed clear at the outset of the matches that there may have been something stronger than advertised in the Orange & Lemonades at lunch, as the trainline tight on the right of the first fairway saw a number of golf balls deposited on the tracks, in a fresh left to right breeze.
Out first Jamie Mackie and Ruaraidh Stewart surged into a promising initial lead, but were pegged back and eventually overhauled on the 17th; whilst captain Niall Booker and Tilly Davenport made it to the 18th before succumbing in their match, completing a 2-0 victory for the college. OGGS members will be pleased to hear that 3 fourth-formers were playing, all with single figure handicaps.
The links were in magnificent condition, with firm, fast putting surfaces. Hospitality in the clubhouse was also first-rate, with the relatively recently renovated upstairs area in the clubhouse a spectacular setting to enjoy some tea and home-made shortbread.
